* Update from the Field
Greetings Buffalo Friends,
This week the National Park Service released their summer count of the Yellowstone bison herd, America's only continuously wild population. For those aware of last winter's slaughter of more than a thousand buffalo, news that this year's estimate is 3,900, a full thousand buffalo short of last year's count, doesn't come as a surprise. Wild buffalo in America today number an alarming .01 percent of this country's historic wild bison population.

With the buffalo safe, for the moment, grazing the highlands of Yellowstone National Park, BFC's education and outreach efforts are going strong. This week marks the close of our wildly successful summer table in Yellowstone, where we shared information on the buffalo, their slaughter, and our hope for their future with thousands of park visitors from around the world.

We currently have two crews on the road in California and Colorado, visiting communities, sharing information and video, and meeting and inspiring supporters old and new.

Jesse, Mike, and Seamus are giving a presentation in Berkeley tonight and in the coming week will visit the following California communities: San Jose, San Francisco, Menlo Park, Stockton, Sacramento, Monterey, and San Luis Obispo.

Josh is travelling the Southwest in a grease-powered car, and will give a presentation tonight in Durango Colorado. From there he'll visit Moab Utah and Gunnison, Crested Butte, Carbondale, Boulder, and Nederland Colorado.

For more info on the Southwest Roadshow:

If you live in or near one of these communities or know someone who does, please come out and meet us, hear stories and watch footage of the buffalo, and get involved in the essential movement to protect the future of America's only continuously wild buffalo.

* Current Ebay Auctions to Benefit Buffalo Field Campaign
Amazing artist and huge advocate for wild buffalo, Eldorado has helped make available more beautiful items from artists of the Oglala-Lakota Nation for auction to help support BFC's efforts to protect the buffalo. Descriptions for and links to each item are below. Bidding on all three beautiful items ends September 12 and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Buffalo Field Campaign's frontlines defense of the bison.

BEADED EARRINGS
These earrings measure about 2 1/4" inches long (the beaded part), have kidney-type ear-wires, and were made by a Sioux Indian artisan from the Pine Ridge Reservation. Having done some beading myself, I'm guessing the lighting must have poor judging from the blues beads invading the intended brown, black, and white theme.

BUFFALO HOOP PAINTING
Beautiful hoop painting of 'cosmic buffalo' and mounted warrior. Canvas is of black dyed leather. Tassels are blue. Top fringe is rabbit fur. It was crafted by Donovan White Face from the Pine Ridge Reservation.

BEADED MEDALLION
* "Pretty beaded medallion pin made by a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This wonderful medallion was acquired from the Blue Feather Alliance, a 501(c)3 nonprofit located in Colorado. They work exclusively on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota where the poorest county in the United States is located. One of the things they do to help the people of Pine Ridge is to buy their arts and crafts."

* This portion of the text has been borrowed from a Blue Feather Alliance ebay ad.

In a recent email to us, Eldorado wrote: "For several years now, you guys have been my heroes. These feeble efforts on ebay to assist are nothing compared with the thankless battles you...wage daily to protect our buffalo brothers. My profoundest respect, admiration and love." Eldorado, we could not do what we do without the support and inspiration from people like you! Thank you, Eldorado and artists, for being with us and for the buffalo!

This essay written and read by BFC's Dan Brister, in response to comments aired last week by the bison-unfriendly Montana Farm Bureau Federation, speaks for itself:
