It's worth wondering what the two million people who have already visited Yellowstone National Park this summer would think about a hobby rancher killing a wild, Yellowstone-born bison, especially given that this particular rancher made his millions off of Yellowstone as a concessionaire, and has become one of the biggest threats to some of the very wildlife he's profited from. On July 24, a bull bison was reported in the KOA campground next door to hobby rancher Pat Povah's Deep Well Ranch, located off of Highway 20, just a few miles from Yellowstone's west entrance and adjacent to Gallatin National Forest. A Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks game warden went to the campground to "escort" (haze) a bison off of the campground and onto Gallatin National Forest land. Immediately after this haze, the FWP game warden ran into Povah, who told him that another bison had entered his property. The game warden entered Povah's property himself, only to find the buffalo dead, shot by Pat Povah. Nearly every summer, Povah kills a bull buffalo, because such killings are sanctioned under a livestock industry influenced Montana law -- 81-2-120 -- that must be repealed.

In Montana, those who kill wild bison tend to be protected for their actions, while those who put life and limb on the line to defend the gentle giants are treated as criminals. As the rest of this Update from the Field informs, there are more deadly plans underway for America's last remaining wild buffalo, but those who defend them and their right to roam continue to grow stronger, weakening the lame excuses and hole-filled arguments the livestock industry thrusts upon the public and spins to the media and decision-makers.

Please read on to get the most recent news about what's happening in wild buffalo country, what decision-makers are planning, and all the things you can do to champion North America's largest land mammal. These prehistoric gentle giants maintain their wild integrity and determination to live wild and free, battling great and illogical odds. Buffalo Field Campaign will continue to champion them and break the status quo.

* NEW TAKE ACTION: Park Service Threatens Operational Quarantine

Please comment by September 12 to stop a proposal to turn the domestication process of quarantining wild bison into a fixed management practice.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Yellowstone is *not* accepting comments via email. Use our Take Action page for information and suggested talking points, but you will have to send your comments by traditional mail to Compliance Office, Attn: Yellowstone Bison Quarantine EA, P.O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, WY, 82190, or through this web form. Please don't let this small inconvenience stop you from making your voice heard!

* Documentation Demonstrates How Livestock Board Corrupted Decision on Habitat for Wild Bison

Wild bison advocates call attention to abuse of public process that has denied access to year-round habitat for wild buffalo in Montana. Over 100,000 people have been disenfranchised by Montana's livestock industry board. Read BFC's full press release and supporting documentation HERE.

* BFC West Coast Road Show Dates Announced

BFC's Campaign Coordinator Mike Mease will be hitting the road in September and October for a road show to Washington, Oregon, and California to share music, stories, video, and activism inspired by the Yellowstone bison. He'll be joined by musicians Goodshield and Mignon Geli for what promise to be a handful of very special events. Please join BFC if you live in or near the towns linked below. Email Mike for more details or to help promote these events.

* VOLUNTEER! Seeking Buffalo Warriors for Approaching Field Season

Buffalo Field Campaign has seasonal openings for field volunteers. We have opportunities for every season, but are in great need of folks during our field season which run from mid-November through May, and is when wild bison are migrating into Montana. Any buffalo within Montana's borders is in danger of being shot on sight, hazed, or captured and shipped to the slaughterhouse. All volunteers are provided room, board, gear, and training. We cater to most any dietary need and respect vegan and vegetarian diets. We are located in a warm log cabin by beautiful Hebgen Lake, just a few miles outside of West Yellowstone, Montana. Click on the button above or HERE to learn more and make your plans. See you on the front lines!

*By the Numbers

The last wild, migratory buffalo populations are currently estimated at fewer than 4,000 individual animals, living in and around Yellowstone National Park. Wild, migratory bison are ecologically extinct throughout their native range in North America.

*Last Words of Buffalo Inspiration ~ Derek Jensen

"It's really clear that civilization is killing the planet. I'm interested in living in a world that has more wild salmon every year than the year before. A world that has more migratory songbirds every year than the year before. A world that has less dioxins and flame retardants in mothers' breast milk. A world not being destroyed. A world where there are not dead zones in the oceans. A world not being systematically dismantled. I want to live in a world that is not being killed. I will do whatever it takes to get there."

~ Derrick Jensen, co-author of Deep Green Resistance, in an interview, 2005
