* Update from the Field

We are pleased to report that, though incredibly frigid, the past week has been a good one for the buffalo. Our patrols report little sign of hunters and no dead buffalo.

We experienced nearly a full week of the mercury falling well below zero, with one of the nighttime temperatures dipping down to a brisk -43! Winter is definitely here now and has our full attention. Invigorated by the cold, frost-rimmed volunteers have been hard at work in the field and around the cabin, watching out for the buffalo and monitoring migration corridors while simultaneously keeping the home fires burning, thawing frozen pipes, shoveling snow, and doing everything else that makes this place run. As we huddle around our warm fires, our thoughts and hearts go out to the animals that live in these intense climates and have no fires or shelters, no other choice but to brave these conditions or succumb to the numbing cold.

If winter were their only antagonist, survival would still be a major accomplishment for adult and sub-adult buffalo, while buffalo calves have a 50/50 chance of even making it to their first birthday. Unfortunately, thoughtless man-made plans intend to compound the difficulties of simply trying to stay alive. On top of state and treaty hunts, the Montana Department of Livestock has plans to capture, vaccinate and kill buffalo in the Hebgen Basin, while in the Gardiner Basin Yellowstone National Park, the InterTribal Buffalo Council and the Confederated Salish & Kootenai tribes are planning capture wild buffalo and transport them to slaughter facilities. For ecologically extinct wild buffalo, it doesn't matter who is doing the killing, or whose slaughter facilities they end up in -- the end and senseless result is the same. Help us stop the slaughter and help these herds flourish!

RAISE YOUR VOICE for America's last wild, migratory buffalo! See below for some very important take action items, a new video, awesome gift ideas that support the work of BFC, and a very special thank you to a new and amazing supporter you all know!

Buffalo Field Campaign 12/11/13

Wounded Buffalo Hearts
Sadly, Yellowstone National Park, one of the main killers of America's last wild buffalo, has entered into agreements with the InterTribal Buffalo Council and the Confederated Salish & Kootenai tribe, and will begin handing over captured wild buffalo to these tribal entities for direct shipment to tribal slaughter facilities.

Sadly, Yellowstone National Park, one of the main killers of America's last wild buffalo, has entered into agreements with the InterTribal Buffalo Council (ITBC) and the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes (CSKT), and will begin handing over captured wild buffalo to these entities for direct shipment to tribal slaughter facilities. Both the ITBC and CSKT are partners in the highly controversial Interagency Bison Management Plan (IBMP), and the CSKT is also one of the tribes that harvests wild buffalo under treaty right.

Yellowstone will be thrilled if the public takes the position that, if the tribes are getting them, all is well. Not so! Yellowstone is using the tribes to try to shift blame away from themselves, and there are many other tribes and tribal members who are absolutely opposed to the ITBC and CSKT entering into these nefarious contracts. For ecologically extinct wild buffalo, it doesn't matter who is doing the killing, or whose slaughter facilities they end up in -- the end is the same. The main point is that buffalo shouldn't be going to slaughter at all. Slaughter is carried out as a management "tool" of the IBMP, under the idea of "surplus" buffalo. There are no surplus buffalo. Under the IBMP the agencies and tribes have agreed to a population target objective of 3,000 animals -- that's it. Anything over that is considered "surplus" by the IBMP. The 3,000 bison objective is not based on science, biology, ecology, nothing but the convenience of the managers involved with the IBMP.

Help us stop the slaughter of America's last wild, migratory buffalo and help these herds flourish!

* Mr. Bob Barker -- A Wonderful New Ally for the Buffalo!

"Come on down" and wish Bob Barker a Happy 90th Birthday and convey huge buffalo thanks for his generous support of BFC! Click photo for larger view.

Television celebrity and life-long animal advocate Mr. Bob Barker has recently done the buffalo a great service. Through his DJ&T Foundation, Mr. Barker and the foundation's Executive Director, Ms. Nancy Burnet, made a significant contribution to BFC...an investment in animal defense.

This generous act will reap significant impact for buffalo and other animals (and humans!) in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem by allowing BFC to improve and expand their protection of the last wild, migratory herds of buffalo.

The price was indeed right, and Mr. Barker's generosity is already at work providing our patrols with safer vehicles, better field gear, improved base-camp facilities, and even new mattresses for our many volunteers from around the world!

Mr. Barker is truly one of the most influential animal advocates on the planet. BFC offers our thanks to Mr. Barker, and we are very proud to have him be a part of Buffalo Field Campaign!

Today we also celebrate Mr. Barker's 90th birthday and hope you will join us in congratulating him (and sharing this announcement) by forwarding this email to anyone you think would be interested!

Mr. Barker's birthday gift to BFC has made a huge difference for us, but because a great deal of work remains to be done: please consider making a gift to BFC in his honor today. This would make Mr. Barker very happy, and we thank you in advance for your help!

Join your support to Mr. Barker's, and multiply the impact of BFC's important work!

Together we ARE making a difference!

* Volunteers Needed! Join BFC on the Front Lines!

With so many buffalo under the gun, and news from the agencies that capture and slaughter are imminent, we are in great need of volunteers to help document the killing and provide outreach and education to hunters.

Please, if you have even a week or two to spare, we would be grateful for your help. We have a great crew, and the small numbers create a fun, close-knit spirit. If you feel you can help out, please email or call our volunteer coordinators ASAP at: volunteer@buffalofieldcampaign.org, or 406-646-0070.

*Last Words of Buffalo Inspiration ~ Nelson Mandela

"I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death."

"When people are determined they can overcome anything."

~ Nelson "Madiba" Mandela, July 18, 1918 - December 5, 2013. Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa, an anti-apartheid revolutionary, philanthropist, and truly one of the greatest, most influential humans to have ever lived.
