* Urge Your Rep. to co-sponsor the Yellowstone Buffalo Preservation Act

The "Yellowstone Buffalo Preservation Act" (H.R. 3446), bipartisan buffalo protection legislation, was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, November 5. Congressional co-sponsors are needed immediately.

Please call your U.S. Representative and urge them to co-sponsor the Hinchey-Bass Yellowstone Buffalo Preservation Act (H.R. 3446). The bill places a moratorium on the hazing, capture, and slaughter of Yellowstone buffalo until the following conditions are met:

1. The Yellowstone herd is allowed to freely range on federal lands to the north and west of Yellowstone National Park.
2. Management authority of buffalo within Yellowstone park rests solely with the National Park Service.
3. The land exchange on the north side of the park, already initiated and paid for with 13 million taxpayer dollars, is finalized and the small cattle herd currently grazing on key wildlife habitat is removed.
4. The Stephen's Creek buffalo trap, located inside Yellowstone National Park, is dismantled and removed.
5. Agency officials allow Yellowstone buffalo, like other wildlife, to freely roam on lands adjacent to the park.

Contact your Representative immediately and urge them to co-sponsor H.R. 3446.
If you don't know who your Representative is, find out by logging onto www.congress.org or call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

Update From the Field
Volunteers Needed in West Yellowstone
We are happy to report that another week has passed with no buffalo being slaughtered by the Montana Department of Livestock (DOL). Not that they didn't try. The agents came to town, wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars, and were once again outsmarted by the buffalo. Every week from now until June the DOL and federal agencies will descend on the Yellowstone ecosystem, spending millions of dollars to haze, capture, and slaughter the Yellowstone buffalo, America's only continuously wild herd. The agencies say they are doing this to protect livestock from brucellosis, but there will be no cattle in the area until at least mid June and there has never been a documented case of brucellosis transmission from wild buffalo to livestock.

The BFC is in dire need of field volunteers. We are the only group working in the field every day to stop the slaughter of the Yellowstone buffalo. Daily patrols monitor buffalo migrations and do all in our power to keep them out of harm's way.

We currently have less than ten volunteers and need help. If your heart has been telling you you need to help protect the Buffalo, now is the time. We thank everyone for supporting our efforts in all of the beautiful different ways. Now even the Halls of Congress are ringing with the hoofs of buffalo and the tragedy occurring in Yellowstone. It takes all of us in all of our different ways to STOP THIS SLAUGHTER. The light can now be seen at the end of the tunnel and our persistence must keep strong. Together we will make CHANGE.

The Buffalo Field Campaign is a grassroots effort made up of volunteers who patrol the Yellowstone boundary to protect the Yellowstone herd and hold the management agencies accountable for their actions. We are the only group working in the field every day to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone's wild buffalo. BFC volunteers defend the buffalo's traditional winter and spring habitat and advocate for their protection. Since 1997 we have hosted more than 1700 volunteers from across the country and around the world.

If you would like to contribute to our efforts there is much you can do. We receive the majority of our funding from individual supporters. Help us prepare for the coming winter with a tax deductible contribution. Every little bit helps. Send donations to the address below.

"If the public gets used to the idea that bison, like elk and deer, should be free to roam on federal lands, then it may lead to a reduction in the amount of public lands forage aloted to livestock. That's what the ranchers really fear."
