What
is the cost to taxpayers? |
|
At
present, the agencies are wasting 2.8 million tax-dollars
each year to harass, capture, and slaughter Yellowstone's
buffalo to protect
approximately 200 domestic cattle.
(Please note there are no cattle in the West
Yellowstone area due to the harsh winters.
See FAQ, "But there are no cattle
in West Yellowstone, right?")
Nearly all of Montana Department of Livestock. United States
Forest Service, and Montana Fish Wildlife & Park’s
expenses are related directly to hazing, capturing or killing
buffalo. A large portion of Yellowstone National Park’s
buffalo management expenditures also relate to these activities.
All of the monies spent for buffalo management in FY2003 are
federal funds. Further, it appears that FY2004 expenditures
will greatly exceed FY2003 with the addition of $750,000 appropriated
directly to MDOL by the Department of Agriculture bringing
the known total above $3,000,000.
