Why is the Duck Creek capture facility on Dale Koelzer's
(a bison poacher) property?
Home> FAQ>
Dale Koelzer's property adjoins Yellowstone National Park north of West Yellowstone. In the fall of 1999 Dale Koelzer poached a Yellowstone Buffalo and removed it's head and genitalia. Unfortunately, Dale Koelzer is the same man that the State of Montana contracts with to locate their Duck Creek bison capture facility on, and the MT Department of Livestock (DOL) also leases room in his basement to house their employees.

During the trial, Koelzer testified he had tried to herd the bull away from his barn twice with his pickup, and the third time the animal made a "half-charge" toward his truck. "Buffalo aren't worth much," he said. "There are plenty of them. When my truck was in danger, too bad for the buffalo."

In the Photo of the Duck Creek capture facility, the background is Koelzers house, the foreground trees are the border of Yellowstone National Park. The Montanta Department of Livestock often bait the trap with hay in order to lead them into the capture facility. They have even installed a gate on Koelzers property that faces the park so the buffalo can be lured into the trap more easily. A buffalo was shot near the trees in the Fall 2005 bison hunt. Here is a video clip from the bison hunt on Koelzer's property.

1. Why does the State of Montana contract with a poacher?
2. Why does Dale Koelzer live on the border of Yellowstone if he doesn't like buffalo?
3. Why is Dale Koelzer concerned with buffalo on his property when there are no cattle there?
4. In the winter there are no cattle on Dale Koelzer's property so how can brucellosis be transmitted? (See- FAQ- But there are no cattle in West Yellowstone area, right?)

5. When Koelzer killed the buffalo, he left if for the bears, why would he be tolerant of grizzlies and not a buffalo?
6. What would make anyone think he wouldn't shoot a grizzly in his back yard? (Koelzer then "dragged the buffalo away from his residence so the bears could eat it," the affidavit said. 10/02/99)
7. Why was Koelzer feeding elk? During the trial, Koelzer said he didn't tell FWP officials he had shot the animal because in past years FWP had objected to his feeding elk, which created bad blood between him and some FWP officials.
