No
more Yellowstone National Park bison were captured or
sent to slaughter on Friday.
However, park rangers on horseback hazed 17 bulls from
the Stevens Creek area further back inside the park's
northern boundary Friday morning, park spokeswoman Cheryl
Matthews said.
The number of bison captured in Yellowstone still stands
at 299.
Of those, 154 have tested negative for exposure to brucellosis
and are being held in a corral northwest of Gardiner.
They will be held until spring to stop them from leaving
the park's northern boundary. Calves and non-pregnant
yearlings testing negatively are being vaccinated for
the first time this year.
A total of 145 have tested positive for exposure to brucellosis
and have been shipped to slaughter over the past two weeks,
Chronicle reports said.
Brucellosis is a disease which causes cows to abort. Ranchers
in states which lose the brucellosis-free status must
conduct blood tests on cattle being shipped out of state,
which will increase their costs.
