State
wildlife officials will hold two meetings this week to
gather public input on last winter's bison hunt and
take suggestions about how to proceed with future hunts.
The first meeting will be held in West
Yellowstone at the Sunspree Resort on Tuesday, May 16.
The second will be in Gardiner at the
Community Center on Thursday, May 18.
Both are scheduled to run from 6 p.m.
to 8 p.m.
Last winter's hunt offered 50 tags to
the general public. Next winter's is likely to be bigger,
Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesperson
Mel Frost said Thursday, but the final size has not been
determined.
The FWP commission will take up the
issue at its June meeting.
Frost said FWP staffers are compiling
a recommendation for the commission at this time, and
next week's meetings are part of that process.
The meetings are to focus only on the
bison hunt. Issues concerning overall bison management,
bison quarantine and other matters should be taken
up in other venues, Frost said.
