Letter writer's ignorance of cattle facts appalling
Bozeman Daily Chronicle
4/15/08
I read the letter by Jay Moor in the March 28 Chronicle with an utter disgust at the surplus of ignorance on Mr. Moor's part. Mr. Moor, did you know that cattle are used for more than just food?

Obviously, leather is used in clothing, footwear, purses, belts, wallets, gloves and upholstery. Aside from that, cattle are organically similar to humans and our bodies easily accept medication made with their components. Byproducts are used for treating hemophilia, killing viruses and making anti-rejection drugs. From cattle we get heparin, Vitamin B-12, insulin, glucagon, thrombin, and numerous other medical drugs.

Cattle fats and proteins are found in many products used in the home, including candles, ceramics, cosmetics, crayons, deodorants, floor wax, perfume, paper, paints, insulation, plastics, shaving cream, soaps, and toothpaste - to name a few.

In traveling, keep in mind that cattle help you to get where you are going. Beef fat is an ingredient of antifreeze and a binding agent in asphalt. Beef fats and proteins are used in lubricants, oils, high performance greases, brake fluid and glue for jets and automobiles. Cattle provide stearic acid to make tires hold their shape.

My suggestion, Mr. Moor, is that if you don't like living in a state where a large part of the economy is derived from the cattle industry, perhaps you should move somewhere where cattle are not so prevalent. May I suggest a large city - and please feel free to take some wolves and free-roaming bison with you as I'm sure that they would be welcome there. While you're walking around in your chicken-skin loafers with dirty teeth, just hope that you won't have any medical problems or have to drive anywhere. Heaven forbid you support the cattle industry since you despise it so much.
