Students, activists and concerned citizens will assemble in front of the Department of Livestock Headquarters in Helena, Montana, to protest the state's lease of land from Dale Koelzer, a known poacher (See 10/01/99 Press Release). Koelzer owns the land that the DOL maintains a capture and testing facility for the Wild Yellowstone Buffalo that roam out of Yellowstone National Park in the winter to feed. Department of Livestock employees also lease lodging from him in his house. Koelzer recently was caught poaching a male buffalo after Buffalo Field Campaign activists walked upon the carcass while hiking in the Park; Koelzer's property lies on the west border of the park. Koelzer's poaching the buffalo is a crime, which he must be punished for. The Department of Livestock contracting with him is unacceptable. Our tax dollars should not be given to such a person and should not be used for the slaughter of the last, wild, roaming herd of buffalo, said Allison Lovejoy, a Buffalo Field Campaign volunteer. Protesters will stage a mock buffalo capture and citizens will speak about the issue. A large banner reading No State Contracts with Criminals will also be present and a petition will be pesented to Marc Bridges, ringleader of the Department ofLivestock. The assembly will begin at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, October 29, 1999.
