The U.S. Forest Service ceded wildlife authority to the Montana Dept. of Livestock who dictate where wild buffalo can/cannot be on National Forests.

A legislative audit found the Montana Dept. of Livestock was not enforcing and Montana ranchers were not complying with Designated Area Surveillance rules for brucellosis.

In a 15-year period, of 136,229 people who applied to hunt wild bison in Montana 776 drew tags.
