One of the most important things the Buffalo Field Campaign does to protect America’s last wild buffalo is through education and public outreach efforts. When the buffalo are ordinarily safe inside the boundaries of the National Park, we focus our efforts on public education about the obstacles the bison population faces. BFC needs friendly, energetic, and passionate volunteers to join us for this engagement!
Some of the activities you will be participating in during the Summer Season:
- Public Outreach : Operating information booths inside Yellowstone National Park educating visitors about buffalo and the issues they face
- Maintenance : Assist in structure, vehicle, and facility maintenance projects
- General : Cutting grass, cooking, cleaning, bucking and stacking wood, among other seasonal duties
Summer Volunteers must be comfortable with public speaking and educating visitors to Yellowstone in a polite and professional manner. All volunteers will be trained on everything they need to know with an orientation program, and paired with an experienced team member to help express the information to visitors.
Volunteering during our Summer Season is an amazing way to experience Yellowstone. Under direction of the Summer Volunteer Coordinator, volunteers will camp and operate an educational table in the National Park. A typical schedule consists of 5 work days and 2 days off per week. Tabling shifts are usually 4 hours.
This leaves plenty of free time to explore the park and experience this unique ecosystem.
During August tabling crews will be based at BFC headquarters and travel into the park each day. Our main cabin is equipped with comfortable bunks and a fully equipped kitchen. All chores such as cooking and cleaning are shared equally amongst the volunteers and the summer coordinator.
Basecamp is located near the shores of Hebgen Lake, our cabins have a wonderful view of the Madison Mountain Range out front, with the Gallatin National Forest and Mount Hebgen in our backyard. Volunteers have the opportunity to spend their free time swimming, hiking, sightseeing, whitewater rafting, wildlife viewing, and much, much more.
We are happy to work with students on internship opportunities as well. Please join us and stand with the last wild buffalo! To volunteer please complete our base camp volunteer application.
